Largest pharmacy operators in Ontario

Companies that own or franchise their stores, counted from the store names on the register and grouped by parent company. Loblaw Companies includes Shoppers Drug Mart plus the pharmacies inside its grocery banners (Loblaws, No Frills, Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs, Fortinos, and others, registered as Loblaw Pharmacy or the drugstore pharmacy). Sobeys includes Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland, and Longo's Pharmacy; Metro includes Food Basics and Jean Coutu. Shoppers Drug Mart and Jean Coutu stores are run by associate-owners or franchisees under the parent's banner. Click a row to see the stores.

Banner programs in Ontario

Stores that carry a banner name, including independents that add it to their own name, such as "Algonquin Pharmasave". This is a way to browse the stores, not an ownership group: each store is generally owned by its own pharmacist or corporation, one owner may hold several stores under different banners, and many independents carry no banner at all. The banner provides branding, buying, and support. Click a row to see the stores.

What is on the Ontario register

The register holds historical accreditation records alongside current ones. A Sold record is a previous certificate closed out when a pharmacy changed hands, and most have an active successor at the same address under a new accreditation number, so they are not closed businesses. The directory below lists active pharmacies only, one row per location.

Directory FAQ

How many pharmacies are there in Ontario?
There are 5,474 active pharmacies on the Ontario College of Pharmacists public register as of October 28, 2026, spread across 522 cities and towns. Ontario is the largest pharmacy market in Canada by a wide margin.
Which pharmacy chains have the most stores in Ontario?
Loblaw Companies is by far the largest pharmacy operator in Ontario with 877 active stores on the register, counting Shoppers Drug Mart, the pharmacies inside its grocery banners (registered as Loblaw Pharmacy and the drugstore pharmacy), and MediSystem, its long term care specialty division. Rexall follows with 231 stores; it was acquired from McKesson by Canadian private equity firm Birch Hill Equity Partners in a deal that closed at the end of 2024. Wal-Mart is next with 151. Grocery banners are grouped under their parent company, so Sobeys includes Safeway, FreshCo, Foodland, and Longo's Pharmacy stores (Sobeys' parent, Empire, holds 51 per cent of Longo's and agreed in August 2026 to buy the nine Morelli's pharmacies inside Longo's stores, which are now registered as Longo's Pharmacy), and Metro includes Food Basics and the franchised Jean Coutu pharmacies in eastern Ontario (Metro acquired the Jean Coutu Group in 2018). Banner programs such as Pharmasave, PharmaChoice, I.D.A., Guardian, Medicine Shoppe, Remedy'sRx, and Whole Health are listed separately because they are not ownership groups: each store generally belongs to its own pharmacist or corporation, and one owner may hold stores under several different banners. Multi-site operators whose stores all carry the company name, such as CareRx, are listed with the operators.
Does this directory show who owns each pharmacy?
Not yet. The Ontario College of Pharmacists publishes owner of record only on each pharmacy’s individual detail page, not in its bulk register export, so ownership is not included here. We are adding it gradually, the same way our British Columbia directory’s ownership data was built up over time.
Where does this directory data come from?
Every record is pulled from the Ontario College of Pharmacists public register export. This snapshot was captured October 28, 2026.
What does a Sold status mean on the Ontario register?
A "Sold" record is a previous certificate of accreditation, not a closed pharmacy. When an Ontario pharmacy changes hands, the College closes the old accreditation record and issues a new one for the same location, so most sold records have an active successor at the same address under a new accreditation number. This directory lists active pharmacies only, so each location appears once. Verify current details with the College before relying on them for a transaction.
